Image Search

To search for images using keywords, type your words into the 'Image Search' box at the top right of your screen and click on GO. Do not include commas or full stops.

Keyword Phrases: You may wish to search for known specific phrases such as "Blurred Background" or “Arid Climate”. To do this you must insert the keyword phrase in “double quotes” - not single quotes in the Image Search box. By default the Image Search box will display the phrase 'Put "multiple word" terms in quotes'.

You may use and, or, not in between keywords as required. Keywords separated by spaces will have the same effect as using and.

Examples:

cat and mouse will find images which contain both cat and mouse

cat mouse will find images which contain both cat and mouse

cat or mouse will find images which contain either cat or mouse or both

cat not mouse will find images which contain cat but not mouse i.e. it will exclude cat images containing mouse.

By default the keywords will respond to a partial word match, i.e. the keyword fly will include the words flying and flyer.

Advanced Search Options.

Underneath the Image Search box is the link Go to Advanced Search Options. If you click on this link a new panel will display the advanced search menus.

On the left of the panel words or phrases can be entered in the Advanced Search box. Above the box are 3 options: all words, any words, and exact phrase.

If you check all words your search will find images with keywords that match all words or phrases entered.

Each time this process is repeated, a list of search criteria entered so far will display in the refine search box.

In the centre of the panel is the Search Filter. There are initially two drop-down menus. The top menu is the list of all search Categories available. When you select a category all the images associated with that category will be displayed. A further drop-down menu of sub-categories will also appear to the right of the categories menu. If you select a sub-category the images so far displayed will be narrowed further to those associated with that sub-category. The bottom menu is the list of all Contributing Institutions. If a specific institution, such as National Library of Scotland, is selected only images from that particular institution's collection will be returned. The default option is All Contributor Institutions which will return all images.

To the right of the panel are further Search Options. Two drop-down menus offer the option of refining your search further by specifying Colour and Orientation.

It is possible to clear all search criteria information by clicking the Clear Advanced Search Criteria link.
